Compostable Satchels? We’ll Pass (Here’s Why)

G'day Goodeau Gang!

Let’s talk shipping materials! We sometimes get pitched those home compostable postage satchels you might’ve seen floating around. And look, we love compost as much as the next -  but we’ve got a good reason.

Here’s the short version:

Compostable satchels are only a good option if they're actually composted. If they end up in an anaerobic environment like landfill (which, realistically, a lot do) they don’t break down properly. In fact, they can release methane, a not-so-lovely greenhouse gas.

So what do we use instead?

We go old-school (and low-impact) with:

  • Cardboard boxes - fully recyclable and compostable

  • Paper padded satchels - padded with recycled newspaper / fully recyclable and compostable

  • Paper tape - a practical and low waste way to add some colour to our packaging / soy based ink / fully recyclable and compostable

This setup can go straight into your kerbside recycling or your compost bin - no second guessing, no guilt. Whether you’re team compost or team recycling bin, we’ve got you covered.

Why not both?

We love packaging that’s flexible. By choosing paper-based materials, we make it easy for everyone to dispose of them responsibly, whether you’re composting, recycling, or both.

The takeaway?

Home compostable satchels sound great, but unless they’re actually composted, they can end up doing more harm than good. Our paper-based packaging keeps things simple, circular, and planet-friendly.

Thanks for making low-waste choices with us - and especially for caring enough to read stuff like this. You're the real MVPs.

Candice and the Goodeau Team.
