Compostable Pouch or Recyclable Bottle? Which Bin Wins?
G'day Goodeau Gang!
Let’s talk refills! We have two options for our powder products, and whilst it might seem that compostable is by default the best choice, it actually depends on how your refill will be disposed of.
So here’s a little guide to help you pick the best match for your setup.
Got a Compost Bin? Go for Home Compostable.
Our home compostable pouches are a great low-waste option if you’ve got a compost system at home (or access to one). They’re certified to Australian and EU standards to break down safely in backyard composts (no industrial facility needed).
But here’s the catch - if these pouches end up in landfill (an anaerobic environment) they break down in a way that can create methane, a greenhouse gas that's that’s not exactly doing the planet any favours. So if you’re not composting, they’re not the dream option.
No Compost? Aluminium Might Be Your Mate.
If composting isn’t part of your life, our aluminium bottles with aluminium lids may be a better choice. Aluminium is one of the few materials that actually holds value in recycling, which means it’s more likely to actually get recycled (Cash for Cans anyone?). Plus, it can be recycled again and again without ever losing quality.
Just make sure your bottle’s empty and clean before popping it in the recycling bin.
What’s “Better” Anyway?
We wish there was one clear-cut winner here, but the truth is it’s tricky to know exactly which option has the lowest footprint without a full life cycle analysis based on every product's unique journey to your bathroom shelf.
So whilst we can't create one single perfect solution, we hope this information helps you best choice for your situation.
Quick Recap:
-
Home compost? Go compostable.
-
No compost? Aluminium’s a great choice.
-
Biggest win? Actually using what you buy and disposing of it the right way.
Thanks for making low-waste choices with us - and especially for caring enough to read stuff like this. You're the real MVPs.

P.S. This is the reason that we don't use the popular Home Compostable Satchels for our shipping. Since we don't know whether the person we're sending to has access to compost, we use materials that can be composted and recycled. This means cardboard boxes, paper satchels and paper tape. Whilst it's more expensive, it's important that we choose products that align with our values. Read about it here!
